John Gokongwei "The Colossal Businessman"
From a struggling 15-year-old vendor in the markets of Cebu, John Gokongwei, Jr. has become one of the most celebrated businessmen in the country.
Gokongwei, the eldest of five children, was born in Xiamen, China in 1926. His family came to the Philippines when he was only a years old.
When World War II erupted, his family’s fortune drastically went down. His mother and other family members had to go back to China while John Jr. and his brother Henry stayed in the country. Their uncle, Manuel Gotianuy, took care of them and put Gokongwei in school. He studied at the University of San Carlos, where he graduated valedictorian.

With an impressive academic record tucked under his belt, he worked for Philippine Investment Management Consultants, Inc. (the PHINMA Group) and then with Bancom International Limited and American Express Bank.
